We are looking for two Electrical, Instrumentation & Control (EI&C) Engineers on behalf of and in support to our client for their location in Aix-en-Provence, France. The selected candidates should show integrity and professionalism.

Please note, the successful candidates will be employed by ATG Europe (or one of its subsidiaries). Furthermore, upon selection, they will be subject to a general security screening performed by an external provider (further information will be provided at the interview stage).

The successful candidates will support the development, installation, integration, commissioning, and operation of the Electron Cyclotron Instrumentation and Control (EC-I&C), a system used to heat the plasma to 150 million degrees. It is composed of the plant controller and the subsystem control units. The EC-I&C is the interface between the ITER control system and the hardware of the EC plant. This task also includes the development of different software components (e.g., PLC, SCADA) needed to meet I&C system requirements and technical specifications for the gyrotrons and ECH Power Supplies.

The EC system is responsible for delivering 20 MW of RF power to the Tokamak, allowing to start-up, heat, and control the plasma. It involves many different systems that must be controlled in a synchronized manner to achieve this complex goal and react to fast events happening in the plasma. Dealing with such high power requires a sequential start-up of the necessary sub-systems, sub-millisecond real-time control and few microsecond reaction times in case of faults; this is achieved by using slow controllers (PLCs), fast controllers interconnected with a real-time network and Field Programmable Gate Arrays.

The successful candidates will be tasked with, but not limited to:

  • Support the integration of the ECH Plant Controller and ECH Power Supplies with the different Gyrotron controllers and other ITER interfacing systems (CODAC, EC Plant and safety);
  • Support the development of the I&C main and sub-system control units;
  • Design and implement Human-Machine Interfaces for the supervision of the EC sub-systems;
  • Perform the required testing and commissioning of the EC components delivered to ITER;
  • Develop documentation and new versions of the control system for the FALCON test facility to adapt to the experimental needs.

Job requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Instrumentation and Control systems or similar (the required degree may be substituted by extensive professional experience involving similar work responsibilities and/or additional training certificates in relevant domains);
  • At least 2 years of experience in design and development of one of the following: Fast Controllers real-time applications, Slow Controllers using Siemens PLCs (SCL), or FPGA firmware;
  • Experience in the development of technical documentation for large industrial projects: requirements specification, test and acceptance documentation, etc.;
  • Experience in design, implementation, installation and operation of big industrial or scientific plants involving distributed control systems is an asset;
  • Experience in the development of applications using Java, C/C++, or Python is an asset;
  • Experience in industrial middleware and communication protocols – OPC UA, Profinet, Modbus is an asset;
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
