Job description

We are looking for a Media Relations for UK and Ireland on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA) for their location in Harwell, UK, to join their Outreach Team. The selected candidate should show integrity and professionalism.

Please note, the successful candidate will be employed by ATG Europe (or one of its subsidiaries). Furthermore, upon selection, they will be subject to a general security screening performed by an external provider (further information will be provided at interview stage).

The successful candidate will be tasked with, but not limited to:

  • In support of the preparation, implementation and execution of communications plans, campaigns and related events and exhibitions, the Service Pillar PA aims to provide the Agency with interface capabilities with Public in general and Media communities (including social media);
  • Applications of the service include local and establishment outreach activities, corporate strategic events, and exhibitions organisation, interface with related national space entities, as well as media relations, newsroom activities, publishing agenda based on communication opportunities, news campaigns, situational awareness, social media posts on adequate platforms, monitoring, and analysis;
  • Through this WP, the Service Provider shall ensure the satisfactory provision of the services listed below;
  • This list is neither exhaustive nor static and upon notification from ESA might evolve if the activity concerned requires it;
  • In coordination with the ESA Officer in charge of Media relation for ECSAT and with any relevant ESA Communication Program Officers;
    • Implement the media relation activities at ECSAT in close coordination with the relevant Head of Establishment office and with ECSAT relevant services;
    • Implement the media relation activities related to UK, Ireland and/or any other ESA Member State in the future;
    • Establish and manage the community of space journalists, who need in depth scientific, technological, political and financial information and facilitate their access to ESA experts
    • Plan, implement and evaluate engagement activities to foster a close engagement of the space journalists with ESA’s programmes, e.g. background briefing events;
    • Keep a log-file for all media requests;
    • Contribute to media insight analysis;
    • Maintain and use relevant journalist and influencer databases;
    • Maintain the list of ESA spokespersons;
    • Deal with requests from media for interviews, information and support related to ECSAT, UK and Ireland - ensuring the necessary level of message coherence and answering the journalist queries in a timely manner;
    • Organize interviews and briefings for individual journalists as appropriate;
    • Organize media and outreach events;
    • Ensure the newsroom and media relations processes are well implemented between the establishments;
    • Prepare, send and update press releases and news releases;
  •  Appropriate user manuals and configuration files for accessing the relevant systems;
  • Production & Coordination meetings’ outcomes;
  • Monthly Report on the overall activity;
  • Reports, minutes and all relevant deliverables as per tasks description;
  • Media actions performed throughout the month.

Job requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Outreach, or a related discipline;
  • At least 4 years of relevant work experience;
  • High proficiency with modern electronics office automation tools, in particular Microsoft Office suite and electronic mailing;
  • Ability to communicate with industry counterparts in the execution of the project-specific tasks;
  • Familiarity with ESA working environment in a similar position is a distinct advantage;
  • Familiarity with outreach activities related to science and technology.
  • Capacity to identify priority actions and handle high workloads;
  • Easy contact with personnel and well-balanced autonomy in the execution of the requested tasks;
  • High level of flexibility as well as initiative and team spirit;
  • Rigor, commitment, and reliability in the execution of the assigned tasks;
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
