Job description

We are looking for a Education Programme Communication, Production and Outreach Support on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA) for their location in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. The purpose of this position is to support the TEC Directorate, home to the ESA Education Programme, which has the objective to use space as a theme to enhance the literacy of young people in science and technology and to motivate young Europeans to pursue STEM studies and careers related to space in particular. The selected candidate should show integrity and professionalism.


Please note, the successful candidate will be employed by ATG Europe (or one of its subsidiaries). Furthermore, upon selection, they will be subject to a general security screening performed by an external provider (further information will be provided at the interview stage).


The successful candidate will be tasked with, but not limited to:

  • Generate, maintain and update the ESA Education Annual Communication Activity Calendar, for communication planning and reporting purposes;
  • Maintain, timely publish, update and actively promote the ESA Education and ESAKids web and social media platforms from the front-end point of view;
  • Monitor the status of web and social media platforms as far as consistency, scientific accuracy and completeness of content;
  • Ensure that relevant on-line links and applications are maintained and working;
  • Monitor social media platforms and regularly interact with audiences to build followership;
  • Provide management and publication support to other online platforms under the coordination of ESA Education, including the ISEB website and the ESA/ESERO school project online platforms;
  • Propose and support/execute the implementation of improvement concepts/actions, including the implementation of structural changes, of any size, for the above on-line platforms;
  • Produce, edit and publish articles, texts, background information and multimedia, including products for non-formal online learning and e-learning, games, applications, etc, at C2 English level which are scientifically correct and didactically sound, either directly or by tasking external providers indicated by ESA, to populate/update the above-mentioned online platforms and social media, as well as for any offline communication product such as printed and exhibition materials, etc;
  • Provide in general inputs to the production of multimedia for publication;
  • Liaise with the relevant ESA-selected provider(s) for the translation of texts for the ESA Education Office in general;
  • Produce and publish on-line the electronic version of existing materials and activities for all ESA Education target groups;
  • Manage online competitions, activities, and events, including related shipping of goodies and prizes when applicable;
  • Manage the calendar of appearances of the ESAKids mascot, e.g. at events;
  • Support the preparation and implementation of communication plans and communication campaigns for the ESA Education Programme (e.g. CubeSat launch communication campaigns) including the drafting and approval of communication plan documents, the coordination with TV/media/ communication officers within and outside ESA, the production and logistics aspects as applicable;
  • Support the organisation and logistics of inspiration and engagement events in general, and the related production;
  • Produce and coordinate and follow up the production of visual design and layout work (2D, 3D, etc) of ESA Education educational, promotional and outreach items (graphics, illustrations, printed materials, layouts, goodies, multimedia, apps, web-TV video and podcast scripts, blogs, exhibition display panels, posters, and presentations;
  • Liaise with Education TV and video production responsible appointed by ESA Corporate Communication for video integration in other communication products, online and offline channels and events;
  • Liaise with applicable external providers for the production, storage and shipment of physical goodie and outreach material items, including monitoring the available stocks and taking prompt action for stock refill, including management of stocks/storage at ESA facilities;
  • Support and coordinate the creation and updates of visual guidelines for ESA Education products, online platforms and activities, including identity branding and manuals;
  • Support and coordinate communication and outreach partnerships with external actors, by dealing with ESA Corporate Communication and other designated services when applicable;
  • Support and coordinate the Office’s contribution to communication and inspirational events covered and supported in terms of logistics, text and audiovisual support, goodie and exhibition materials, promotion, communication, content, are concerned (up to 60/y), including the European Space Education Conference;
  • Handle and redirect requests received through the ESA Education dedicated external contact mailboxes and social media channels;
  • Provide expert input on demand to the evolution of existing ESA Education activities and to the definition of new activities in the same area of expertise. This will occur through participation in relevant meetings, brainstorming sessions and other means defined by ESA;
  • Provide expert advice and inputs for: state-of-the-art/latest outreach and communication trends and tools, non-formal and informal STEM education trends in the 3-18 y/o age range, especially in ESA Member and Associate States; front-end and back-end online platforms management trends and tools.

Job requirements

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field;
  • At least 4 years of relevant experience;
  • High proficiency with modern electronics office automation tools, in particular Microsoft Office suite and electronic mailing;
  • Ability to communicate with institutaional counterparts in the execution of the project-specific tasks;
  • Familiarity with ESA working environment in a similar position is a distinct advantage;
  • Familiarity with outreach activities related to science and technology;
  • Capacity to identify priority actions and handle high workloads;
  • Easy contact with personnel and well-balanced autonomy in the execution of the requested tasks;
  • High level of flexibility as well as initiative and team spirit;
  • Rigor, commitment, and reliability in the execution of the assigned tasks;
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the EU;
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
