Job description

We are looking for an ​Avionics Data Handling Subsystem Engineer​ on behalf of and in support to our client for their location in ​Milan, Italy​. The selected candidate should show integrity and professionalism.


Please note, the successful candidate will be employed by ATG Europe (or one of its subsidiaries). Furthermore, upon selection, they will be subject to a general security screening performed by an external provider (further information will be provided at interview stage).


As an Avionics Data Handling Subsystem (DHS) Engineer within the Avionics Team, you will be responsible for all aspects of hardware electronics and hardware – software interactions, from high-level requirements collection to detail design of the different subsystems and avionics components, passing through all the phases of the procurement of avionic items, providing also support on assembly, testing and integration of units within the platform.


The successful candidate will be tasked with, but not limited to:

  • Analyse and trace high-level avionics subsystem requirements to electrical and electronic specifications at unit and board levels;
  • Requirements flow down from system or satellite specification down to subsystem and units;
  • Manage and maintain avionics components requirements;
  • Definition and maintenance of the DHS documentation data package throughout all the lifecycle of the satellite mission from phase A to E;
  • Achievement of all the subsystem and units relevant review internally and with the customer on time and cost;
  • DHS Test supervision for AIV requirements closure;
  • Satellite Database consistency maintenance;
  • Participate and collaborate concurrently to consolidate the architecture definition of On-Board Data Handling subsystems (OBDH);
  • Concurrent engineering aimed to the definition and maintenance of the Software Subsystem Specification (SSS);
  • DHS Test specification definition and Test procedures AIT support;
  • Perform technical trade-off analyses (Interfaces, budgets, architectures, schemes, topologies, etc.) to make technical decisions; 
  • Conduct avionics hardware and DHS analyses to feed design-validation loops (single-point failure, FMEA, reliability, hazard analysis, thermal, radiation, NCRs, RFDs, RFWs etc.); 
  • Perform circuit functional checks, debugging, troubleshooting and confidence testing;
  • Coordinate with a multidisciplinary team (software, firmware, mechanical, AIT, harness, production) to fulfil the quality, cost and programmatic objectives;
  • Drive improvements and perform investigations and trade studies to push avionics hardware design to new boundaries in terms of reliability, capabilities, mass and cost savings; 
  • Generate and release on schedule engineering documentation such as technical notes, test reports, electrical interface control document (EICD);
  • Document and communicate the design and analysis results thoroughly and clearly via design reviews;
  • Ability to produce presentation for customer reviews;
  • Support to the production of Satellite User Manual and Space To Ground ICD;
  • Collaborate actively with the Procurement Team to support all the activities related to DHS items new developments, manufacturing and procurement. Support vendor selection, manufacturing monitoring and procurement of items and EGSEs and consumables according to applicable product assurance and regulatory standards;
  • Collaborate actively as focal point of avionics platform design with the AIT team to support the qualification and acceptance test campaigns (functional and environment tests);
  • Provide interface support with the AIT and Production team to ensure compliance with the final design and feasibility to fulfil schedule goals.

Job requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electronic engineering or an appropriate engineering field;
  • At least 2 years of experience working in related positions;
  • At least 2 years background in electronics hardware design in at least one of these areas:
  • Power electronics: DC-DC converters and topologies, battery management circuitry, EMI filtering, LCL interfaces, protection circuitry, load switches, optocoupled control interfaces, etc.;
  • Digital electronics: communication interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, MIL-STD-1553, CAN, PCIe, Ethernet, RS-422, RS-485…), memories, clocks, logic circuits, design for SoCs, microcontrollers, and microprocessors;
  • Experience with requirements management, tracing high-level requirements to hardware electronics design solutions;
  • Experience working in formal engineering processes (requirements capture, documentation, design reviews, design verification, etc.);
  • Understanding of electronic circuits and physical principles that drive the design of avionics hardware such as EMC, ESD, thermal, vibration, outgassing, SEE, etc.;
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to interact with other disciplines;
  • Proven ability to work in a transversal and multitasking environment; 
  • Excellent attention to detail.
