Job description

We are looking for a ​Mission Performance Engineer​ to complete our consultants Workforce Management Service to support the ​Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes​ of the European Space Agency (ESA) at their location in ​Noordwijk, The Netherlands​. The Project Department in D/EOP is structured around four main pillars: Science/Earth Explorers, Copernicus, Meteorology and National Projects. The latter currently has only one project (IRIDE), but is expected to grow. The purpose of this Support Service is to ​support project teams across all aspects of mission performance. This includes structuring and delivering mission performance activities through key work packages, with a focus on both instrument-level and end-to-end performance​.   

 

Please note, the successful candidate will be employed by ATG Europe (or one of its subsidiaries). Furthermore, upon selection, they will be subject to a general security screening performed by an external provider (further information will be provided at the interview stage).

The successful candidate will be tasked with, but not limited to: 

 

  • Contribute to the overall specification, development, and integration monitoring of the E2E Mission Performance Simulator chain and its components; 

  • Monitor the development of the Instrument Simulator Software and the Level 1 Prototype Processor Software developed through ESA contracts with industry; 

  • Support the development of scientific components developed through contracts with industry and scientific institutions; 

  • Review the Level-1 and Instrument Simulator algorithms, software code, and input/output interfaces, as well as the Level-2 input/output interfaces, in particular with respect to Level-1 

  • Ensure that the E2E Mission Performance Simulator chain and its components and algorithms meet the required functionality and performance, taking into account system, instrument, geophysical model and calibration/validation facility aspects; 

  • Install, maintain and operate an up to date copy of the E2E Mission Performance Simulator software at ESTEC; 

  • Administer the internal ESA software problems list and ensure correct iteration with the implementors; 

  • Analyse impacts on the mission performance resulting from deviations during the development programme; 

  • Ensure the proper verification and validation methods are proposed and implemented; 

  • Support Test Data production and verification; 

  • Support the analysis of the data collected during on-ground and in-orbit calibration and characterisation campaigns; 

  • Develop any needed software tool to support all the mentioned activities; 

  • Provide necessary inputs for the relevant internal and external meetings. 

Job requirements

Please ensure that your CV clearly explains how you meet the mandatory requirements. If it doesn’t align completely with the essential criteria, it could result in rejection. 

  • Master’s degree, or equivalent, in Physics, Engineering, or Computer Science, with solid expertise in remote sensing technologies, including both passive systems (e.g. imagers, radiometers) and active systems (e.g. radar, laser); 

  • At least 7 years of relevant work experience; 

  • Proven experience in software development environments;  

  • Proven experience in Earth Observation ground processing chains;  

  • Proven experience in data analysis;  

  • Experience in interacting with other stakeholders (engineers, scientists);  

  • A working knowledge of remote sensing instrument techniques;  

  • A working knowledge of complex systems modelling and simulation;  

  • A good level of autonomy and organizing skills; 

  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken; 

  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the EU.
