Job description

We are looking for a Senior Thermal Architect on behalf of and in support to our client for their location in Milan or Rome, Italy. The selected candidate will be responsible for Thermal SubSystems Engineering, including coordinating and leading a project team of specialists, operating under the leadership of a MTS Architect.

The selected candidate should show integrity and professionalism.

The successful candidate will be tasked with, but not limited to:

  • Creation of thermal related engineering work packages and maintain the budget and follow-up over project duration;
  • Elaboration, development and accommodation of Thermal technical baseline solutions on the basis of customer requirements and budgets;
  • Define and maintain all Thermal budgets, and to ensure these budgets remain within allocated requirements;
  • Ensure proper flow-down and allocation of lower level sub-system requirements and budgets and maintain them up to date during the program lifetime;
  • Develop Thermal Subsystem requirement specification, constantly review and assure harmonization with other Subsystems;
  • Responsible for the definition and specification of internal and external thermal interfaces including margins and associated documentation (i.e. Thermal ICD);
  • Perform technical management of subcontracts in the assigned technical area;
  • Support the evaluation and management of deviations and non-conformances in thermal;
  • Support implementation of agreed changes to the design and deliverables;
  • Collaboration with technical management and other Systems Engineering disciplines;
  • Generate development and qualification/acceptance plans (i.e. thermal vacuum and balance tests, TED testing) to verify thermal design;
  • Support TRL definition for the subsystem of competence;
  • Support trade-off in the thermal S/S;
  • Review Thermal and Geometrical Mathematical models ( GMM/TMM);
  • Prepare/review verification approach to validate thermal model/design through Breadboard/PFM/QM/FM testing;
  • Prepare Thermal testing (i.e. including test set-up definition, test prediction with specialists, test procedure (i.e. step-by-step);
  • Run thermal testing at different levels (i.e. component/unit/subsystem/satellite) as test conductor/lead;
  • Prepare test report;
  • Lead thermal model correlation process.

Job requirements

  • Master’s degree or PhD in STEM or related scientific areas;
  • At least 15 years of professional experience in design, development and verification activities for space projects in Thermal area;
  • At least 8 years of experience with Thermal modelling and analysis;
  • Ability to lead and guide a project related Thermal engineering team in combination with technical leadership capability;
  • Proficient with Thermal Engineering tools such as Systema Thermica, ESATAN and Thermal Desktop;
  • Demonstrated basic FEA skills for structural analysis (FEMAP/Nastran, Ansys, or others), and excellent knowledge of Thermal design principles;
  • Experienced with carbon fiber/ aluminum composite honeycomb design;
  • Innovative, driven, out of the box thinker, self-motivated to investigate and implement new ideas, and proactive in overcoming obstacles;
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in cross-functional planning, coordination, and task execution situations involving the full spectrum of engineering and integration activities;
  • Team-minded and ready to work in a multi-functional and multi-cultural, fast-moving and complex/technical environment;
  • Flexible attitude and strong initiative;
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results;
  • Strong focus on reaching progress by thinking and communicating in terms of solutions, and the ability of reaching goals under schedule pressure;
  • Excellent communication skills, combined with the ability to work in international and multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken with a certification;
  • Other language skills are a plus (preferably German).
