We are looking for a ​Spaceflight Operations Development Engineer​ on behalf of and in support to our client for their location in ​Fino Monasco, Italy​.  

 

The successful candidate will support the definition, development, and validation of space mission operations across both space and ground segments, translating mission and stakeholder requirements into operational concepts, procedures, and plans. They will contribute to system architecture decisions from an operational perspective, develop and maintain mission operations documentation and training material, and coordinate simulations, verification, and validation campaigns. The role involves close collaboration with Mission Control, internal engineering teams, and external stakeholders to ensure safe, efficient, and fully validated flight operations. This position is also open for freelancers and candidates looking to work remotely from within the EU.

 

Please note, the successful candidate will be employed by ATG Europe (or one of its subsidiaries). Furthermore, upon selection, they will be subject to a general security screening performed by an external provider (further information will be provided at interview stage). 

 

The successful candidate will be tasked with, but not limited to: 

  • Derive and maintain detailed operations-related requirements for both space and ground segment systems;  

  • Support in the analysis of external stakeholder requirements (e.g. user requirements, mission requirements, customer requirements, etc.);  

  • Support architecture definition, analysis and decision-making processes for space and ground systems;  

  • Derive and maintain operational concepts and mission-level CONOPS;  

  • Analyze the design of space and ground segment systems from an operational perspective to derive operations products;  

  • Create and maintain Flight Operations Procedure (FOPs) designs, including Spacecraft Operations Procedures, Ground Operations Procedures, and On-Board Control Procedures;  

  • Create and maintain Mission Operations Plans (MOP);  

  • Create and maintain of Flight Operations Manuals;  

  • Collect relevant operations-related information (e.g. TM&TC lists, FDIR routine lists, OOL thresholds, etc.) from system development teams to enable the development of operations products and configuration of ground system tools;  

  • Develop scripts to automatize the execution of FOPs;  

  • Generate and maintain space and ground systems training material for the D-Orbit's Mission Control Centre;  

  • Plan and conduct training campaigns for D-Orbit's Mission Control Centre personnel;  

  • Generate and maintain Operations Validation Plans that include Simulation Campaigns with external stakeholders, in coordination with the Flight Operations Team;  

  • Generate and maintain Operations Validation Procedures and Reports, and keep ground and space segment teams informed about the progress of the operations validation campaign;  

  • Conduct and report operations verification campaigns that test Mission Reference Databases, FOPs and MOP (a.k.a SVTs);  

  • Coordinate operations simulation campaigns (SOVs);  

  • Generate and/or contribute in engineering plans (such as Technical Resource Plans, Design and Development plans, Verification and Validation plans, Operations Engineering Plans, etc.);  

  • Provide technical support to D-Orbit's Mission Control Centre in executing operations as needed;  

  • Interface with all space and ground teams to prepare operations products for flight operations;  

  • Interface with external stakeholders (e.g. customers, suppliers, partners, institutions, regulators) representing D-Orbit's technical team within the frame of the assigned programs;

Job requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Space Engineering; 

  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience; 

  • Solid knowledge of typical Space and Ground Segment architectural solutions;  

  • Familiarity with Mission Control Software architectures;  

  • Familiarity with typical spacecraft platform architectures;  

  • Proactive attitude and ability to work in team and individually;  

  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and effectively;  

  • Demonstrable experience in real-time flight operations (operating space and/or ground systems) is an asset;  

  • Solid knowledge of relevant space industry standards (e.g. ECSS-E-ST-70 series or CCSDS) is an asset;  

  • Solid knowledge of Python is an asset;  

  • Demonstrable experience in the preparation of flight operations documentation is an asset;  

  • Demonstrable experience in the verification and validation of space and/or ground systems is an asset;  

  • Familiarity with typical software development methodologies and versioning processes is an asset;  

  • Solid knowledge of Systems Engineering processes is an asset;  

  • Solid knowledge of Orbital and Attitude Dynamics is an asset;  

  • Professional proficiency in Italian is an asset; 

  • Candidates must be eligible to live and work in the EU;    

  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
